Alf Landon ran for president in 1936 and held the record for the biggest landslide loss of presidency until 1964. With only two states won, Maine and Vermont, he still took the loss with humor. He was known as G.O.P.’s “Grand Old Man” and it seems his legend will live on in the Alf Landon Center. In 1934, Mr. Landon ran for congress, that year, he was the only Republican gubernatorial candidate in the country to be elected. This, of course, made him a presidential candidate.
Even though he lost the election in a landslide he became well known for his Valliant run against Franklin D. Roosevelt. It is said he didn’t fear Roosevelt like most of his republican comrades. After his 1936 loss against FDR he did not run for office again but continued to stay active in the Republican Party.
Now his house will become "The Landon Center", this will be a dedication to Alfred Landon and will be a political museum. It will be located in Independence, Kansas. As of right now, the house is being moved two blocks to its new location.
Every morning he walked nearly a quarter of a mile with his cane accompanied by Mrs. Dwight. Roosevelt visited him on Sept. 7, 1987 two days before his 100 birthday. Mr. Landon remained active until his last month of hospitalization. He past on soon there after on October 13, 1987 at 100 years of age.
''In a hundred years,'' Mr. Reagan said, ''Alf Landon has chased many dreams and caught most of them.''
