Elevate the Museum - 5-Year Renovation Pledge Campaign

On Saturday, March 28, 2015 at 7 pm the Independence Historical Museum & Art Center will launch "Elevate the Museum", a Five-year Renovation Pledge Campaign. The goal of the campaign is to raise funds to make the 100 year old building more accessible and safer to members and visitors.

Currently, most of the museum is inaccessible to patrons and visitors that are unable to climb stairs. The most expensive and most needed item in the plan is an elevator needed for access to the 20 rooms in the basement and two on the second floor. Other items include an outdoor access ramp, improved lighting, larger more accessible restrooms, and renovations to the attic to allow for expanded storage and improved accessibility to an increasing inventory of valuable artifacts.

The night will be laced with fun, featuring emcees Kathy Newkirk and Steve McBride and live musical entertainment. A short program will outline the plan and how to participate. Anyone interested in participating in the event and investing in the Museum and Art Center is invited to attend. The museum is a 501(c)3 organization. Heavy hors d'oeuvres and drinks will be served. No admission will be charged. The museum requests an RSVP by March 7, 2015. For more information click here, email museum123@cableone.net or call 620-331-3515.

""Of Creatures and Children: glimpses of people and animals from around the world" a special art exhibit will be on display from March 14 through April 4 at te Independence Historical Museum and Art Center, 123 N. 8th, Independence, KS. Sandra Kimzey Wimbish grew up in rural Montgomery County. She has been creating art all of her life and has been teaching art students for over 15 years, hoping to inspire them to tap the creativity within as the hone their skills and express themselves through visual arts.

Sandra has traveled and lived in a number of countries around the world and currently resides in North Carolina. Her travels have given her the desire to use her art as an invitation to the viewer to expand their perspective of the world around them. Using a variety of styles and mediums--with graphite, colored pencil, ink, and acrylic paint--this exhibit plays off of colors and textures, as well as the stark crispness & detailed precision of ink.
